Chennai to Madurai overnight — bus options ranked
AC sleeper, semi-sleeper, Volvo, ordinary: comparing operators, fares, departure points and what to actually book for the 9-hour ride.
Chennai to Madurai is one of Tamil Nadu's busiest overnight corridors. Your choices, roughly cheapest to most premium:
SETC Ordinary (₹450-600)
The budget option. Departs Koyambedu (CMBT) every 30 minutes through the evening. No reclining seats, but you arrive at Mattuthavani by sunrise.
TNSTC Express (₹600-800)
Fewer stops than Ordinary, slightly faster. Departs CMBT and Madhavaram MMBT.
Private semi-sleeper (₹700-1200)
KPN, SRS, Parveen — book on the operator app or RedBus. Reclining seats, sometimes a curtain. Reasonable for ~9 hours.
AC sleeper (₹1100-1800)
Flat berths, AC, charging point. Worth it if you genuinely need to sleep. Book early — these fill up Friday and Sunday nights weeks in advance.
Train (₹250-2500)
Vaigai Express and Pandyan Express run overnight. Sleeper class is cheaper and more comfortable than any bus; book IRCTC two months ahead.
