TNSTC bus fare rules in plain Tamil — what you actually pay
Ordinary, Express, Deluxe, AC sleeper: how TNSTC stages fares, when concessions apply, and what to do when the conductor charges you more.
TNSTC fare structure changes once or twice a year. Here's what's true as of the latest revision:
Stage-based pricing
Every route is divided into stages (~5 km blocks). Ordinary buses charge ~₹1.10 per stage; Express ~₹1.50; Deluxe ~₹1.90; AC sleeper ~₹3.00.
Free women's travel
Women travel free on Ordinary buses on every TNSTC route inside Tamil Nadu under the Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme. AC, Express, Deluxe and inter-state services are NOT included.
Concessions
- Students with ID: 25% off Ordinary fares
- Senior citizens (60+): 50% off Ordinary fares
- Persons with disability: free, all classes (with concession card)
When charged wrong
Ask for a printed receipt. Without one, file a complaint with the route number, ticket date, and amount to TNSTC's grievance portal — they refund credible reports within ~2 weeks.
